Ullapool is a busy fishing village on
the north west coast of the Highlands of Scotland.
Founded as a herring port in 1788, the
original village was designed by Thomas Telford. Fishing played an
important role in the village, in the 70s the Russian "Klondykers"
were a comon sight in the loch and landing at the pier.
There is still a local fishing fleet
landing prawns and fish in the evenings and whilst this allows us to
offer some of the finest seafood in the world, Ullapool itself has
also grown and offers much more beyond this.
We have many fine venues for music,
arts and drama, and host the Loopallu festival and an annual guitar
festival.
The ferry for Lewis sails from
Ullapool, offering a chance to explore the Hebrides, and local boats
take trips through Loch Broom and to the Summer Isles.
We are centrally placed for exploring
the Highlands and there are many well known stops, loch and sea
fishing locations (permits can be arranged easily) and visitor
centres within an easy drive of us.
Similarly, there are numerous walks,
climbs, and cycle routes catering for all levels of fitness and
ability, again within easy reach of the village. |
